We look at rock and natural feature assessment, effective ground, top rope, and multi pitch anchors, equipment selection and its correct usage and applications. We also take a detailed look at climbing equipment materials technology. Both the novice and expert will come away with many new skills at the end of this one day course. Topics Covered - Creating pre and self-equalized anchors, there uses and limitations. - Creating anchors using Natural and Artificial components - Single and multi pitch anchor construction and evaluation - Rock and natural features evaluation, micro and macro rock evaluation. - Fixed gear evaluation: bolts, pitons, slings, and stoppers. - A detailed look at artificial gear placements including SLCD’s, stoppers, tri-cams, and Hex’s. - Climbing equipment construction, properties, limitations, and uses. - Common myths and truths about climbing equipment. - Climbing equipment testing. - Multiplication of forces will be covered, such as vectors, pulley systems, cantilevering, leverage, and shock loading. We will look at how these forces affect the anchor and how to reduce or eliminate these forces. Maximum Number: Six INSTRUCTION ON TRADITIONAL LEAD CLIMBING – 2 DAYS (OR 2, 1-DAY SEGMENTS) This course is for climbers wishing to learn the more complex skill of placing artificial gear on traditional lead climbs, and establishing sound anchors at the top of the pitch. We start with an in-depth review of gear placements and climbing equipment, then move on to “mock leading”, (leading with a top rope). Topics Covered: - Climbing strategies - Equipment selection and considerations. - An in depth look at artificial gear placements. - Fixed gear evaluation. - Rope and stance management. - How to avoid the multiplication of forces! (Vectors, Pulleys, Leverage, and Shock loading). - Common Myths about climbing. Number on Course: Maximum of 4 INSTRUCTION ON MULTI-PITCH CLIMBING – 2 DAYS (OR 2, 1-DAY SEGMENTS) This course is geared toward the traditional leader wanting to move into the world of multi pitch climbing. On day two we will break into advanced multi pitch techniques such as rescuing the injured leader or second and assisting them to safety by ascending or lowering and rappelling.Day one emphasizes minimizing the risks in the first place (risk management). We will teach you new skills and tricks to stay safe and how to reduce the chance of ever having to use the rescue skills you learn on the course. With Appalachian climbing school you will learn the most up to date and efficient systems being used by A.M.G.A. guides today. No complicated confusing systems, we focus on simplicity and efficiency. All the skills taught in this course are useful in everyday climbing and will improve both your speed and efficiency on the rock. (also how to stay out of the system in the first place.). - Raising and lowering systems. - Ascending fixed and counterbalanced ropes - Using different belay devices in self rescue such as the Gri-Gri and Reverso - Multi pitch rappelling with an injured climber Number on Course: Maximum of 4 |
